Are Straight Cut Gears Stronger Than Helical Gears?
No and Yes. The problem with Helical is they have more horizontal forces. This put more load (angle) on the bearings and transmission case, as well as the support holding the gears. For this Helical gear need more support around the gear, But the cut itself has more contact which should be stronger.

Why are straight cut gears used in racing?
They create fewer horizontal forces load. For this, they don’t need as much support in the transmission case. Ultimately the transmission assembly weight less which in most cases is better suited for racing.
