Step #1 Locking Pliers (aka Vise-Grips).
look to see if there is any part of the screw reachable for a set of Locking Pliers (aka Vise-Grips). just grab on and turn and should spin out.
- If it’s slipping, a (Rotary Tool) can give an edge for more surface area to grab.
- If using (Rotary Tool). make sure you have room, not to cut other than the screw.
- Best used with socket head and button head screws
- Tools used in the picture “rusty” vice grips
Step #2 Rotary Tool (aka Dremel) with Flat Head Screwdriver.
Cut a slot in the middle of the screw and drive it out with a (Flat Head Screwdriver).
- You would need some surface exposed to cut with a (Dremel)
- Try cutting straight down. if you cut at an angle the driver sometimes tries to slip out
- A bigger (Screwdriver) is easier to use but you will need to cut a bigger slot and you will need more room around the screw.
- Best used with socket head and button head screws
- Tools used in the picture Dremel 8050 – Dremel Screwdriver
Step #3 A Drill with Bit
just get a bit about the same size as the thread diameter and start drilling away.
- If the bit is too big you risk cutting more than the screw
- If unsure of the bit size start small and work your way up
- I find that extractor sets that have reverse bits on one side are the easiest, safest, and cheapest way out. (i use only the dill side with small screws)
- If using a regular drill bit, black oxide bits are the best for the money. reverse bits are better but you can use any
- Tools used in the picture Easy Out extractor set #1 #2 … #0 would probably work better
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What tool removes stripped screws?
A drill with a screw extractor bit is the best tool to remove a stripped screw.
What to do if a screw extractor doesn’t work?
If the screw extractor doesn’t work you may need to drill out the head of the screw. The key is to drill out just enough to get the head off the screw without cutting the shaft.
Once the head is gone you can usually separate the two parts and there should be some of the screws left to grab with locking pliers to twist out.
How do you remove a stripped screw without tools?
One method is to use a rubber band or elastic band. Place the band over the screw head and press down firmly while turning the screwdriver. The rubber band will provide extra grip and may help loosen the screw.
How do you unscrew a tiny screw that won’t budge?
If the screw is not stripped out try using WD40 or PB Blast. let it sit for 30min (the longer the better) and try again.
If that does not work try applying heat (I use a soldering iron on tiny screws) but only do this if the heat does not damage the component around the screw.
How to remove small stripped screws without a drill?
If you strip a screw and you don’t have a drill you can try a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Try tapping the driver into the screw and twisting at the same time.
There is something called an “Impact Screwdriver” that might make the job easier.
